USAF Photo Album – 8th Fighter Bomber Wing, Korean War 1950–1953
Most of the photographs depict daily life at K-13 Air Base in Suwon (or Sunon), Korea, which was the main base of operations for the 8th Fighter Bomber Wing (8th FBW), attached to the famous 5th Air Force. This unit played a major role during the Korean War (1950–1953) and
was credited with 18 victories against North Korean aircraft.
It was one of the first USAF combat units to be deployed at the start of the conflict. Based in Japan (Itazuke Air Base) in June 1950, it was deployed from the very first days to protect the evacuation of American nationals and to carry out patrols over South Korea. It then moved to K-13 Air Base in Korea on 23 August 1951. It was from this base that it flew more than 60,000 combat sorties, initially focusing on fighter operations and achieving aerial victories (including the USAF’s first jet victories), before switching to close air support missions for United Nations troops and ground attacks.
The wing occupied the eastern side of the base (including the control tower and the operations building), later sharing the facilities with the famous MiG fighters of the 51st Fighter-Interceptor Wing stationed to the west. The base also hosted F9F Panther aircraft from the US Marine
Corps. As the conflict progressed, the unit deployed several types of aircraft depending on operational requirements, notably the F-80 Shooting Star jets, as well as the propeller-driven F-51 Mustang fighters (modified for greater range), followed by F-86 Sabres towards the end of the war.
Among the unit’s notable feats of valour, the sacrifice of one pilot, Major Charles Loring Jr., who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honour in 1952 for deliberately crashing his damaged F-80 into an enemy anti-aircraft defence position at Sniper Ridge.
A subject rarely discussed and poorly documented regarding the early stages of the conflict.
The cover has come away from the album. 122 photographs
