Description
USAF photo album with names – 4th Fighter Interception Wing (4th FIW), Korean War
1950–1953
This remarkable album belonged to Melvin H. Schoupe, a non-commissioned officer and mechanic with the 4th FIW in Korea, specifically the 334th Fighter Interceptor Squadron.
This unit, equipped with F-86 Sabres, was based at Kimpo Air Base (K-14). It is one of the most famous units to have fought in Korea.
The album contains several photographs of F-86 Sabres, including three exceptional colour shots, and several examples of ‘nose art’, including that of the ‘Lady Luck’ flown by Lt. Charles Cleveland, who officially shot down four MiG-15s in the space of just a few weeks, and damaged four others, listing two as ‘probable’.
The story took an incredible turn in the early 2000s.
Thanks to the help of an enthusiastic friend and the opening of the secret military archives of the former USSR, researchers discovered the official flight reports of the Soviet regiments secretly deployed in Korea. These Russian records irrefutably confirm that a MiG-15 did indeed crash at the exact location and at the precise minute of the Cleveland engagement on 21 September 1952. In January 2008, at an official ceremony, the USAF revised his record: his ‘probable’ victory was reclassified as his fifth confirmed victory. At the age of 80, General Cleveland finally received
his Silver Star and his official title as the 40th Jet Ace of the Korean War.
Another colourful aircraft also features in this ‘Flying Jenny’ album, with several victory markings on the front of its fuselage. Although assigned to the 334th FIS, several renowned pilots flew this particular aircraft during air battles over Korea:
- 2 November 1951: Lieutenant-Colonel George Jones was credited with half an aerial victory (shared) whilst flying this aircraft.
- 8 November 1951: Major William T. ‘Robbie’ Risner (who would later become a famous ace of the Korean War and a hero of the Vietnam War) damaged an enemy MiG-15 whilst flying this aircraft.
The victory tally is therefore an accumulation of successes by various pilots and not the achievement of a single man, as is usually the case.
