Description
Personal photo album: USS TARAWA (CVE-40) 1946–1949 This album belonged to Richard S. Reade Jr., who joined the US Navy’s V-5 pilot training programme before serving on board the aircraft carrier USS Tarawa between 1946 and 1949. The photographs taken on board the ship show F4U-4 Corsairs, TBM Avengers and 2B2C Helldivers, bearing a capital ‘T’ on the vertical stabiliser and wings as the distinctive markings of the USS Tarawa between 1946 and 1949. The album concludes with the appearance of the F9F Panther jet fighter. It is accompanied by a number of documents detailing the USS Tarawa’s post-war deployments. 137 photographs
