Description
Historical book: ‘Hump Pilots Association China-Burma-India’
A rare book published in the 1980s in a limited print run, often restricted to members of
the association and their families. This substantial volume of nearly 600 pages is dedicated to the transport pilots
of the 14th and 10th Air Forces who took part in the airlift between India, China and
Burma, crossing the Himalayas. It brings together a wealth of personal accounts, memoirs and anecdotes from the civilian and military pilots who flew over the Himalayas.
The term ‘Hump’ refers to the nickname given to this mountain range, known as ‘The Hump’. The missions were, in fact, often symbolised by a small camel painted on the fuselage of the aircraft, in reference to the feat of crossing this
particularly dangerous area, subject to the whims of nature. The number of aircraft lost across the Himalayas led to this route being nicknamed ‘The Aluminium Route’ due to the number of aircraft wrecks littering its path.
This book is richly illustrated with previously unpublished photographs and contains several first-hand accounts
by veterans.
Approximately 600 pages. Published in English.
