Description
Pocket Guide to North Africa Printed in 1942 by the U.S. Government Printing Office, this booklet was distributed to American troops during the landings in North Africa as part of Operation Torch. For security reasons, these booklets were distributed on board the ships shortly before the landing so as not to jeopardise the success of the operation. This booklet was intended to inform the soldiers about the region they would encounter as they advanced. It contains a brief history of the region, the languages spoken, a map, as well as local customs and traditions, notably the ban on alcohol consumption in Muslim countries. This booklet also contains several translated phrases to facilitate communication between American troops and the local population.
