Description
Electrically Heated Flying Suit Type F-2
The F-2 heated suit was standardised in August 1943. It consists of a wool jacket and trousers with a heated lining (Insert) buttoned into them, powered by a 24-volt supply. The ‘Inserts’ allow a pair of heated gloves and booties to be connected in parallel, as well as the E-1 heated mask cover and/or a heated visor for the B-8 goggles. The electrical connections to the gloves and booties are made using tabs fitted with two insulated press-studs, which are more reliable than the conventional sockets on the F-1 suit. The final component of the suit is a pair of black felt shoes with rubber soles. An advantage of this suit is that it can be used without the electrical Inserts, particularly in the event of the bomber being abandoned over enemy territory. In February 1944, a variant produced by United Thermo-Stable was standardised under the designation F-2A. The modification concerned the heated inserts, jacket, trousers and booties, which were fitted with thermostats to prevent burns.
The jacket of the outfit on offer is made of woollen cloth with a sheepskin collar and includes its Type F-2A electric heating lining. It shows some signs of wear, such as small holes – some of which have been patched with sewn-on pieces of fabric – frayed cuffs and collar tips, a broken button on the main buttonhole, and a missing button on the waist drawstring tab. Please also note a repair to the 24V power cable of the electric lining. Both the jacket and the lining are size 38 US.
The trousers, also made of woollen cloth, are in excellent condition and complete with their original sewn-in heated lining inside the trousers. The trousers and lining are size 34 US. Although produced by the same manufacturer, General Electric, the colour of the top and bottom is not identical.
