Neptune and Amphitrite, Europe, circa 1700-1720
Folded fan, the leaf in skin, mounted in the English style, and painted with Amphitrite in the company of Zephyr, on her chariot, pointing Neptune out to Love who is about to shoot an arrow at her. Reverse painted with an animated cartel of peasants fishing near small houses.
The ivory frame is pierced and engraved with a scallop shell motif, swans and foliage. When closed, the fan has a shell shape at its head (accidents and restorations).
