[BERTON DE CRILLON, Louis Athanase des Balbes de]. Philosophical Memoirs of Baron ***. Vienna, Paris, Berton, 1777. In-8 (19.5 x 12.5 cm), full marbled calfskin, smooth spine decorated with panels. Upper cap damaged. An illustrated edition featuring four aquatints, including the frontispiece and a view of the interior of the famous philosophers’ café, the Procope. Apocryphal memoirs. Presented in a fictionalised form in which a German baron, enamoured of philosophy and in love with philosophers, finds himself in Paris, where he critiques the philosophers and, in particular, Holbach’s materialist doctrine. A fine copy in a contemporary binding.
