Description
BOURGOING, Jean-François de. A Portrait of Modern Spain. A fine description of 18th-century Spain, illustrated with maps, views and bullfights. Paris, published by the author, 1797. 3 tomes in 3 volumes, in-8, fawn-coloured full sheepskin with root-grain, smooth spines decorated with cross-hatching, featuring a red title label and volume numbers in pine-green, marbled endpapers and half-leaves. VII, 383 pp.; 590 pp.; 362 pp., 11 folded plates. Corners rubbed, caps slightly damaged. Mentioned as a second edition, this work describes Spain in the late 18th century. The set is illustrated with 11 folded plates, including maps and views, and twelve vignettes depicting bullfights. Following a nine-year posting in Madrid as ambassador, Jean-François de Bourgoing (1748–1811) published his observations in 1798 under the title *Nouveau voyage en Espagne ou Tableau actuel de la monarchie*. The work took the title “A Portrait of Modern Spain” from this second, expanded edition onwards, following two further journeys undertaken by the author. An excellent overview of 18th-century Spain; our copy is in charming bindings.
