Description
CERVANTES, Miguel de. Short Stories […]. First edition of this French translation, from the library of John Hayford Thorold. Amsterdam, Marc Antoine, 1705. In-12, midnight blue morocco, plain spine decorated with gold dots, covers decorated with the same motif in a frame, gold interior roulette, all edges gilt. [7] ff., 508 pp., [2] ff., 8 engraved plates including a frontispiece. Caps and corners rubbed, spine faded. Minor foxing, not severe. A rare first edition of this French translation of Cervantes’s *Exemplary Novels*, attributed to Abbé Saint-Martin de Chassonville. The seven short stories are illustrated with eight intaglio-engraved plates, including a frontispiece depicting the author at his desk, with an angel above him offering him a quill. A coat-of-arms bookplate with the name erased, almost certainly from the Syston Park library of John Hayford Thorold (1734–1815), a prominent English bibliophile and politician. A copy of fine provenance in a well-preserved binding.
