Description
[CURIOSA]. LAMBERT, André. ‎A Brief Mythology of Love for Ladies. The Major Gods. Paris, Devambez, 1928. Oblong quarto (22.5 x 27 cm), loose-leaf, with cover and double slipcase. Unpaginated [32 leaves and 13 plates] Scuffs and tears to the corners of the slipcase. First edition and first print of the 13 colour etchings by André Lambert (1884–1967) depicting scenes from ‘Mythologie galante’. A superb typographical work, printed within coloured borders and adorned with headbands, initials and footers. The 13 chapters and the 13 plates illustrating them each relate to a god from Greek and Roman mythology: Jupiter (Zeus) – Juno (Hera) – Neptune (Poseidon) – Pluto – Ceres – Minerva – Venus – Vulcan – Mars – Apollo – Mercury – Diana – Bacchus, Cupid, Psyche. The illustrations are finely engraved in medallions, depicting these gods in scenes of varying degrees of eroticism. A print run of 401 copies; this one is a non-commercial edition (unnumbered) on Arches vellum. In this copy, the thirteenth and final plate appears in three states. André Lambert, born in 1884, of Swiss origin, a pupil of Cormon and influenced by Beardsley, devoted himself primarily to illustrating works on mythology and ancient legends. In the 1920s, together with Georges Aubault, he founded the lavish *Revue Janus*, written entirely in Latin. ‎ A truly beautiful volume produced by one of the great illustrators of the interwar period.
