Description
DEGOUSEE, Joseph and LAURENT, Charles. A Surveyor’s Guide, or a Theoretical and Practical Treatise on Surveying.
Paris, Garnier Frères, 1861.
In-8 (19 x 13.5 cm), half-percaline, title and volume numbers gilt. Contemporary binding.
3 vols.: XII-491 pp. – 532 pp. + atlas (60 plates)
Spines faded. Waterstains on the text volumes.
Second edition, greatly expanded compared to the original of 1847, of this comprehensive manual for surveyors. In addition to the two volumes of text, there is an atlas of 60 plates (compared with 34 in the 1847 edition), illustrated with numerous figures depicting sounding instruments and geological cross-sections.
Having become a civil engineer following his discharge from the army (1815), Degousée specialised in the manufacture of sounding equipment and in surveying contracts for the drilling of artesian wells. The innovations he introduced to this technology, set out in a reference work (Guide du sondeur, ou Traité théorique et pratique des sondages, 2 vols., Paris, Langlois and Leclercq, 1847, reprinted in 1861), earned him numerous awards at national industrial exhibitions and world’s fairs. In particular, he was awarded gold medals by the Society for the Encouragement of National Industry (1830), the Royal and Central Society of Agriculture (1831 and 1835) and the Academy of Sciences (1835).
A fine copy, complete with its atlas (60 plates) in uniform bindings.
