A rare facsimile edition dated to match the original of this famous political novel, published anonymously by Joseph Fievée at the very end of the 18th century.
Paris, Maradan, Year Six (1798).
In-16, brown half-calf with root-patterned grain, spine in long-grained green morocco decorated with compartmentalised metal fittings and the title in gilt letters, with guilloché headbands and edges. Contemporary binding.
XII and 222 pp., one intaglio-engraved plate.
Corners very slightly folded, very few foxing spots.
A rare counterfeit, dated to coincide with the original publication of this highly popular novel by Joseph Fiévée (1767–1839), recounting the thwarted love affair of a young girl from the working classes during the Revolution. It is adorned with a chalcography, placed opposite the half-title page. Suzette is depicted here on the right rather than on the left, as on the engraving of the genuine first edition [Barbier, I, 1114].
A very fine copy, with a distinctive binding.
