Description
FLAUBERT, Gustave and FREIDA, Raphaël. Hérodias.
Paris, A. Plicque & Cie, 1926.
Small quarto (27 x 20 cm), paperback, illustrated and embossed cover, three sets of plates in a separate folder.
67 pp.
A very fine illustrated edition of Flaubert’s short story, featuring 15 illustrations by Raphaël Freida (colour cover, 7 separate engravings, frontispiece, 6 in-text illustrations or end-piece engravings), engraved by Dujardin.
Limited edition of 475 copies. First copy, one of 25 on Imperial Japanese paper; this being the first to come off the press, it bears the number 1. It also contains a set of engravings on Japanese paper in red chalk, a set on Dutch vellum in black, and a set on Dutch vellum in red chalk.
Raphaël Freida (1877–1942), a French painter, engraver, poster artist and illustrator, produced mainly etchings – few in number but highly distinctive.
In *Herodias*, one of the ‘Three Tales’ (a collection published in 1877), Flaubert recreates the splendour of the Orient and the scandalous customs of Palestine in the time of Jesus, and reimagines the portraits of Herodias and Herod, Salome and John the Baptist, all subject to violent passions.
An exceptional first edition printed on Japanese paper, enriched with three sets of illustrations, in perfect condition.
