Description
FLORUS. An Epitome of Roman History in Four Books.
A bilingual edition featuring François de la Mothe le Vayer’s translation of this monumental history of Rome.
Paris, Augustin Courbé, 1656.
Large 8vo, brown calfskin, ribbed spine decorated with grotesque motifs, gilt roulette on the cuts, red edges.
(8) ff., 1032 pp., (4) ff.
Split joints, cap bands missing, corners worn. A few foxing spots; some pages yellowed.
A history of Rome up to the time of Augustus, conceived as a panegyric to the Roman people.
Translation by François de la Mothe le Vayer (1588–1672), presumably based on that of Philippe d’Orléans, brother of Louis XIV, for whom he served as tutor from 1649 onwards. The amusing dedication is a long letter in which the translator chastises himself for having borrowed a few terms from those suggested by the king’s brother.
In good overall condition.
