Second, corrected edition of the most popular English cookery book of the first half of the 19th century, published by Maria Eliza Rundell (1745–1828) in 1806. Aimed at middle-class housewives, this publishing phenomenon sold around half a million copies during Rundell’s lifetime. As well as covering food preparation, the book offers advice on medicine and brewing, and includes a section entitled ‘Instructions to Servants’. The book contains a recipe for tomato sauce – probably the first in written history – and the first written recipe for Scotch eggs. Rundell also advises her readers to avoid waste.
A very complete copy comprising pages 28 and 29a (numbered 28* and 29*), the frontispiece and the 9 plates.
From the library of the French chef Raymond Oliver (1909–1990), with an ex-libris bearing his pseudonym ‘Rouvier de Vaulgran’.
A fine copy.
