A luxurious Strasbourg edition of the ‘Odes’ by the Epicurean poet Horace, in a fine binding in the Bozerian style. Printed on heavy paper. Text edited by Jérémie-Jacques Oberlin (1735–1806), a French philologist and archaeologist from Alsace, Doctor of Philosophy and librarian at the University of Strasbourg. In his ‘Odes’, Horace moves away from the satirical style in favour of a lyricism tinged with self-mockery. Here, the poet abandons the iambic and dactylic hexameter in favour of the major Asclepiadean verse, characteristic of lyric poetry, and the Alcaic stanza (of four lines), which has been virtually unused ever since. Whilst extolling the glory of Rome and Augustus’s policy of pacification, Horace praises the joys of an Epicurean life, sheltered from the torments of the world and the vain pleasures of ambition and wealth. On this occasion, he coins the famous ‘Carpe diem’, to which the Epicurean philosophy is sometimes hastily reduced. In it, the poet depicts himself as a swan taking flight with a solemnly burlesque emphasis.
A superb binding in the Bozerian style, with the interior in very fresh condition.
