First French edition, translated from the eighth edition of the famous ‘Gardeners’ Dictionary’ by Philippe Miller (1691–1771), gardener to the Chelsea Apothecaries’ Company and member of the Florentine Academy of Botany.
A dictionary-style work containing methods for improving vegetable, fruit and flower gardens and nurseries, as well as new ways of preserving wine…
This edition has been notably expanded to include plants unknown to Miller, added by Laurent Marie Chazelles de Prisy, and notes on physics and materia medica by the naturalist François Holandre. At the end of the final volume, in a separate section, is the “Catalogue of Trees and Shrubs”, the “French & Latin Catalogue of Plants Contained in the Gardeners’ Dictionary”, the “Table of English Names”, the “Index of Latin Names” and the “Gardeners’ Calendar” by Miller, translated from the sixteenth English edition.
A two-volume supplement was published in 1790.
A fine copy.
