Folio, contemporary brown calfskin, ribbed spine, panels decorated with small ironwork. 12 unnumbered folios. (notice, epistle, preface), 840 pp. and 18 unnumbered folios (table of contents), engraved portrait in intaglio, headbands and initials. Binding rubbed with losses, front cover fragile, cap bands missing, water stains and foxing, paper missing from the margin of folio 8 (preface), handwritten note in ink on the endpaper. The final edition in folio format, based on the 1652 edition and edited by Henri Estienne. It was published by several booksellers (Rocolet, Béchet, Billaine, Le Petit, Loyson, etc.) and contains a fine engraved portrait of Montaigne. A worn copy in a contemporary binding.
