MONTAIGNE, Michel de. *The Essays*… based on the oldest and most accurate editions. Paris, published by the Society, 1725. quarto (28 x 21.5 cm), full marbled calf, decorated ribbed spine. Contemporary binding. 3 vols.: xcvi-(6)-362-(13) pp. - 540-(15) pp. - 413-(14)-xviii-95 pp. Scuffs and damaged caps; marginal water stain on the first 30 pages of volume 2. A fine Parisian edition published by Pierre Coste, appearing the year after the London edition, and complete with the supplement (Mémoires pour servir aux Essais) printed separately in 1740 under the title ‘Supplément aux Essais de Michel Seigneur de Montagne’ (here bearing the new title dated 1741). It is illustrated with a fine portrait engraved by Jacques Chéreau the Younger as the frontispiece. The text was edited by Pierre Coste based on the 1595 L’Angelier edition, correcting errors and adding critical notes to the first volume: prefaces by Pierre Coste and Marie de Gournay, “Life of the Author”, ‘Judgements and Critiques on the Essays’, a collection of Montaigne’s correspondence at the end of the third volume, and tables. A fine, complete copy in three quarto volumes, with its rare supplement bound at the end of the third volume.
