NIELSEN, Kay. *East of the Sun and West of the Moon: Old Tales from the North*. New York, George H. Doran Company, n.d. (c. 1920) In-8 (23 x 16 cm), hardback, illustrated dust jacket. 204 pp. Spine of dust jacket sun-faded, slight rubbing to the corners. American edition of this collection of 15 Nordic tales compiled by Peter C. Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe (enthusiastic collectors of Scandinavian folklore in the mid-19th century). The illustrations are by the Danish artist Kay Nielsen (1886–1957) and include 24 colour plates on pasted-in inserts, as well as several black-and-white illustrations within the text. The original was published in London in 1914 (Hodder & Stoughton), illustrated by the same artist. A fine copy in the publisher’s binding, with the rare dust jacket still intact.
