Description
[PHOTOGRAPHY]. OPALKA, Roman. Opalka – Self-Portraits.‎. Paris, Editions Yvon Lambert / Editions Courtes et longues, 2011. In-4 (31 x 27 cm), hardback, cardboard binding with illustrated dust jacket. 260 pp. First edition of this spectacular series of self-portraits by the Franco-Polish visual artist Roman Opałka (1931–2011), begun in 1965 and completed upon his death in 2011. His aim was to give tangible form to the passage of time and life in the face of death. The book features numerous fold-out photographic plates mounted on tabs. Opałka’s self-portraits, presented as frontal passport-style photographs, with his gaze fixed on the lens and on the viewer, mark the inexorable passage of time. Each new portrait is a trace of his presence, still alive at a given moment. From 1965 to 2011, the artist reached the figure of 5,607,249, having produced thousands of portraits, now famous for his rather extreme, repetitive and rigorous approach. Within the art world, his tenacity is recognised as a form of courage. A very fine copy, in perfect condition.
