Description
PICASSO and HUGNET, Georges. *Non vouloir*. Paris, Éditions Jeanne Bucher, 1942. in-8 (19 x 14 cm), full ochre morocco, plain spine, gilt title. Gilt head. Bordered slipcase. 76 pp. Second edition of this politically engaged poem by Georges Hugnet, written between March and June 1940 and published clandestinely in Paris in October 1940, without being submitted to German censorship. It is illustrated with four full-page chiselled engravings—zincographs reworked into intaglio prints—included within the pagination: a portrait of Dora Maar, two dancers and a seated woman. Limited edition of 426 copies. This copy, one of 400 printed on bouffant vellum, bears the number 415. The copy is enhanced by an autographed dedication from the author, ‘to Marthe Bois…’, accompanied by an original drawing and collage. Originally published in 1940 with a frontispiece by Joan Miró, “Non-vouloir” was the first resistance poem to appear in print and be signed by its author without being subject to censorship. Composed between March and June 1940, Hugnet’s poem is intended as a poetic manifesto rejecting defeat and occupation, echoing General de Gaulle’s famous appeal of 18 June. A very fine copy illustrated by Picasso.
