Description
RESTIF DE LA BRETONNE, Nicolas-Edme. *Le Pied de Fanchète, ou le Soulier couleur-de-rose*. The Hague, n.p. 1786 [1798] In-12 (18 x 10 cm), Bradel binding, plain spine, title label pasted on. Modern binding. Endpapers replaced. Two volumes in one, continuous pagination: 383 pp. Without the two engravings (one on each frontispiece), which are often missing from copies. Third edition printed in 1798 in Paris ‘though erroneously dated 1786’ (Rives Childs), revised by the author, who signed the dedication in full: ‘To Mrs Lévêque, wife of a merchant of the Rue Saint-Denis’. First published in 1769, Rétif de la Bretonne’s *Le Pied de Fanchette* recalls the fascination with the female foot that prevailed in the 18th century. A fine copy, preserved in a decorative 20th-century binding.
