Description
RETZ, Cardinal de. Memoirs of Cardinal de Retz [with] Memoirs of Guy Joly. Geneva: Fabry and Barillot, 1777. In-12 (16.5 x 10 cm), marbled sheepskin, ribbed spine decorated with panels. Contemporary binding. 6 uncollated volumes. Scuffs, losses to some endpapers. Yellowed pages, a few wormholes. New edition published in Geneva by Fabry & Barillot, marked ‘thoroughly revised and corrected’, of the Memoirs of Cardinal de Retz in 4 volumes, in-12. Included in a matching binding are the memoirs of Guy Joly (2 volumes), which generally complement those of Cardinal de Retz. Jean-François Paul de Gondi, Cardinal de Retz, wrote his Memoirs at the request of his friends whilst in exile, at around the age of sixty (circa 1675–1677), and produced the autobiography of a statesman during a period of civil war, the Fronde. The Memoirs are followed, at the end of Volume IV, by the following documents: Minutes of the Ruel Conference; Le Trictrac; The Burlesque Correspondence of the War of Paris; A Sermon by St Louis, King of France, composed and delivered before the King and the Queen Regent, his mother, by Monseigneur Jean-François-Paul de Gondy; The Conspiracy of Count Jean-Louis de Fiesque; and a memorandum to Cardinal Mazarin on the affairs of Cardinal de Retz.
