Description
SCARRON, Paul. *The Ridiculous Heir, or The Self-Interested Lady*. Paris, Guillaume de Luynes, 1655. Small 12mo (13 x 7.5 cm), half-glazed calfskin, smooth spine decorated with fleurons. Modern binding by Bellevallée. Endpapers replaced. 79 pp. A rare edition published five years after the original (1650 by Toussainct Quinet) of the third comedy by Scarron (1610–1660). A play inspired by a Spanish work (El Mayorazgo by Alonso de Castillo Solórzano). The young Dom Diègue is in love with Hélène de Torres. He realises that she is interested solely in his fortune and his status as heir, rather than in him as a person. Highly appreciated by Louis XIV, this play was included in the repertoire of Molière’s troupe in 1660.
