French first edition of this novel by Laurence Stern, recounting her journey through France and Italy in 1765.
Published in Amsterdam by Marc-Michel Rey and in Paris by Gauguery, 1769.
In-12, brown marbled half-basane, spine with guilloché raised bands, gilt fleurons between the bands, fawn-coloured title label, covers of heavily tinted paper, red speckled edges.
VI, 1 f. and 236 pp.; 2 ff. (title page and table of contents), and 232 pp. and 1 f. (bookseller’s new arrivals), title page fleurons, a few lamp-marks.
Normal scuffing, very rare foxing in the margins.
French first edition, translated by Frénais, of this novel first published in 1768. In it, Sterne recounts, in a free and sentimental style, a journey he undertook in 1765 through France and Italy. A major literary success of its time, this novel exerted a considerable influence on travel writing of the 18th and 19th centuries.
