Description
VEBER, Pierre & Jean. La joviale comédie.
Paris, H. Simonis Empis, 1896.
In-8 (28 x 19 cm), paperback, colour-illustrated cover.
Split spine, fragile volume.
First edition on ordinary paper (following the 20 ‘Japon’ and 10 ‘Chine’ editions).
A work by the Veber brothers: Pierre, a journalist and playwright, and Jean, a caricaturist and painter, who contributed to *L’assiette au beurre* and *Le Rire*.
In this work, they take a highly satirical view of late 19th-century society.
Numerous illustrations by both authors. The spectacular colour cover depicts a descent into the underworld under the watchful eye of two caryatids guarding the gate, who represent the Veber brothers.
A fine copy, enhanced by an autographed dedication on the half-title page from Pierre Veber to the journalist and historian Edmond Lepelletier (1846–1913).
