In-8 (26.5 x 18 cm), personalised cardboard binding, publisher’s blue percaline, gold vignette on the front cover accompanied by the title and name of the collection. Gilt edges. Decorated spine. Plain back cover. 467 pp. As is: spine re-glued, hinges restored. Scuffs. Illustrated first edition of *The Travels and Adventures of Captain Hatteras* in its extremely rare personalised blue percaline cloth binding known as ‘Au cercle pur’. The illustration on the front cover reproduces the vignette from the half-title page, depicting a ship amidst the ice. The cardboard binding is unsigned, but the designer is Magnier. Only four volumes were published with a personalised plate: 1. 1867. *The Voyages and Adventures of Captain Hatteras*; 2. 1867. *Five Weeks in a Balloon* followed by *Journey to the Centre of the Earth*; 3. 1868. *Captain Grant’s Children* (the first of three triple-volume sets); 4. 1871. *Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea*. Of particular note is this beautiful blue colour, which is very rare for this title in its first hardback edition.
