Description
[DESPREZ DE BOISSY (Charles). Lettres de M. Desp. de B*, avocat en Parlement, sur les spectacles. Paris, Butard, 1769.
In-12, blond calf, spine ribbed and decorated, title-piece, gilt fillet framing the covers with fleurs-de-lys in ecoinçon and gilt arms in the centre, red edges (period binding).
Third edition, revised and enlarged by the author, the first to include (pp. 407-444) the beginnings of a bibliography of works concerning the theatre, although Quérard points out that this part was only added to the 1774 edition.
The binding with the ARMS OF THE CARDINAL DE MAZARIN and an introductory leaf indicate that this was a prize book awarded to a student of the Collège des Quatre-Nations, founded after the cardinal's death.
Headbands faded, upper spine partially split, corners worn, a few rubbed, rare spotting in places, otherwise a good copy.
