Description
SACCHINI (Antonio). Œdipe à Colone, opera in three acts first performed before their Majesties at Versailles on 4 January 1786, and by the Académie royale de musique on 1 February 1787. Paris, Imbault, s. d. In-4 of (1) f.-235 pp. of music, half brown basane with small corners, spine with mute nerves (contemporary binding). Binding worn, old angular wetness otherwise good copy. A protégé of Marie-Antoinette, Antonio SACCHINI (Florence, 1730 - Paris, 1786) composed Oedipe à Colone to a libretto by Nicolas-François Guillard. When it was first performed at Versailles, the work met with a lukewarm reception. The difficulties encountered by the Queen forced her to cancel the revival. This was a terrible blow for Sacchini, who died shortly afterwards. The opera was finally successfully revived in Paris in 1787, becoming one of the greatest operatic triumphs of the period.
