[LA FONTAINE (Jean de ) &] FRAGONARD (Jean Honoré). Figures from the Contes de La Fontaine engraved by Martial and intended to decorate the 1795 Didot edition, in 2 vol. in-4°. Paris, Rouquette, s.d. (1880).
In-folio (45.5 x 33 cm) on ff. in printed grey-blue chemise, in a ribboned cardboard portfolio, title label on spine.
Extremely rare collection of 60 plates, printed in bistre before the letter, untrimmed, comprising: 1 title finial, 57 plates engraved after Fragonnard, 1 portrait of Fragonard, 1 table leaf surmounted by a portrait of La Fontaine. This is the 2nd state, printed at 50 copies on Hollande Van Gelder. A total of 400 copies of the 3 states were printed.
Small marginal stain on one of the plates, otherwise a very fine copy. Unidentified owl stamp on verso of title vignette. Ex-libris KF on the upper cover. (Rochambeau, p. 555, n° 180; Cohen, 581)
