Description
SOUTHERN GERMANY, AUGSBURG, late 16th–early 17th century.
A small travelling cabinet in precious wood veneer, inlaid on all sides, decorated with vases filled with flowers and foliage, and with monkeys playing musical instruments. It opens via two hinged panels to reveal ten drawers (four of which are trompe-l’oeil), and a small door (closed), decorated with fantastical architectural motifs and ‘wild grasses’. The top panel, which folds down and is decorated with birds, reveals a small inlaid landscape.
