Estimate €12
Description
BANQUE DE FRANCE – RECEIPT FOR GOLD DEPOSIT FOR NATIONAL DEFENCE in exchange for banknotes: “Mr RIOU BRETON has today deposited the sum of one hundred and fifty … in gold on 2 September 1915”, signed in pen and countersigned by the cashier. OFFICIAL BANK OF FRANCE CERTIFICATE featuring Mercury holding Victory, 123 x 215 mm, signed by PICARD, Secretary-General. NOTE: “Gold is essential for purchasing ammunition; exchange the gold you hold for Bank of France banknotes”: this propaganda appeals to the civic spirit of the French people and their trust in the Republic. It plays on the emotions of families whose sons have been called up. Patriotic fervour quickly took hold; families ultimately contributed 380 tonnes of gold in 1915 alone, and over 700 tonnes across the four years of the war.
