Description
PHOTOS OF THE PAS-DE-CALAIS / CALAIS AND BOULON REGIONS – approximately 350 (three hundred and fifty) photographs, mostly 12 x 18 cm carbon prints, by the renowned photographer Alphonse Abney BARON (1867–1942) “owner of the Manoir de MENNEVILLE in ECHINGHEN, near Pont de Briques”. 350 artistic photographs, in perfect condition, many of which bear handwritten captions in pencil on the reverse, written by the photographer himself – local photographs depicting scenes from the lives of the Romani people and their caravans, families, scenes featuring fishermen and female sailors, working the land, scenes of farm life and agriculture, landscapes, the first tourists, sea bathing and its rituals (attire, horse-drawn caravans and beach huts); but also the 1914 war, featuring British troops—soldiers and officers—military equipment, Indian troops, Australian troops, and carts filled with refugees fleeing the invasion and the front. These photographs are a marvellous find – an incredible and superb collection depicting regional life in the early 20th century. A magnificent and deeply moving work of remembrance.
