Description
TOURS (37) – postcard: MIRAULT FRERES ESTABLISHMENTS ( * ) – THE SANITAS FACTORY “chocolate factory, confectionery, jam factory, walnut oil factory, coffee roasting plant” – Close-up of the facilities. A rather rare postcard of Tours. ( * ) The Sanitas factory was a major historic industrial site in Tours, primarily active in the early 20th century. Louis Henri MIRAULT, the founder (1866–1950), and his brother were leading figures in the economy of Tours. L.H. Mirault served as President of the Chamber of Commerce in 1919. SANITAS: a major industrial and railway hub (the largest railway workshop centre in France; 1900 / 1940), an area razed to the ground by Allied bombing during the Second World War. This destroyed neighbourhood no longer exists today. It was redeveloped in the 1960s under the leadership of Mayor Jean Royer to become the neighbourhood of large social housing estates that we know today.
