Description
1956 – NECESSITY / RATIONING – SUEZ CANAL CRISIS. SET OF 8 Suez Canal RATION VOUCHERS. On 26 July 1956, Egyptian President Nasser nationalised the Suez Canal, which was operated by the French and the British. On 29 November, France and Britain decided to launch a military intervention and seized control of the canal zone. Faced with shocked international opinion – including that of the United States and the USSR – the Franco-British troops were forced to withdraw. Following the blockage of the Canal by the Egyptians and the cutting of the Iraq Petroleum Company’s oil pipeline by the Syrians, the bulk of Europe’s oil supply was cut off. France, which was left without supplies, introduced a rationing system on 29 November 1956; fuel could only be obtained by presenting vouchers. This system lasted for just eight months, until July 1957. New vouchers, some of which are rare, with security printing on watermarked paper. CAR FUEL: Series E (red on yellow), Series B (blue), CAR FUEL 5 litres (salmon), 10 litres (green, 1st series), Car fuel (red and green) 10 litres (2nd series), Diesel 20 litres, Diesel 50 litres, Domestic fuel oil 1,000 litres.
