Description
DOG LICENCE FEES – CITY OF LEVALLOIS-PERRET (Seine). Medal with a loop, dated 1923, inscribed ‘POUR CHIEN DE LUXE’. – brass, SUP NOTE: these small tax tags were to be attached to the dog’s collar. The Act of 2 May 1855 introduced an annual tax on dogs. There were two rates: “companion or hunting dogs” and “guard dogs” (lower rate) – in 1906, the number of dogs subject to the tax stood at 3 million (800,000 ‘luxury’ dogs) – The Act was repealed on 7 June 1971.
