Description
CALAIS / GUINES (62) - 1908 "WOULD YOU LIKE SOME ZALLUMETTES! " – A very famous postcard from Calsi showing a close-up of Marie, Louise, Françoise, known as ALPHONSINE VERNE, born on 19 May 1840 in GUINES, who died aged 71 on 20 February 1911. An iconic match seller, famous in Camais in her day. "Well known to the people of Calais and the surrounding countryside, this intrepid vendor from Guines had been working for over 50 years, making the journey on foot, with her wares, from Guines to Calais and back, several times a week” – photograph by OMER LEFEBVRE, no. 309.
