Japan, Tokyo School, Meiji period (1868–1912). A fine ivory okimono depicting a young peasant girl walking, carrying a basket of peonies on her back, holding a large chrysanthemum flower in her hand, her obi adorned with stylised phoenixes in slight relief, and her feet clad in getta. Signed Dôraku in a cartouche on the base. Height: 25.5 cm. Weight: 837.5 g. With its CIC CITES certificate. Expert: Cabinet ANSAS, PAPILLON D’ALTON & DE LERY. Note: The sculptor Dôraku (Yoshida Dôraku) is listed in a Japanese publication by the Shôtô Museum, *Nihon no zoge bijutsu: Tokubetsuten, Meiji no zoge chokoku o chushin ni* (‘History of Ivory Sculpture in Japan: Gebori-okimono and Shibayama of the Meiji Period’), Tokyo, 1996. He is best known for his okimono depicting female subjects.
