Description
[AFRICA] - HUGUENIN (Jean-Michel). Collection of 34 unpublished photographs from the Jean-Michel Huguenin fonds, born around 1929.
Exceptional set of ethnographic photographs of Tutsi populations (Rwanda) taken during the 1920s and acquired by the collector and art dealer Jean-Michel Huguenin.
2 oblong in-4 albums (240x170 mm) with laces, anthracite hardback covers decorated with a cold-stamped art deco motif.
1 album of 20 black and white photographs and 1 album of 14 sepia photographs, all mounted on mounts in windows with rounded edges.
Covers slightly frayed, tears to head of one volume.
A precious set of 34 photographs that plunge us into the heart of the lives of the Tutsi populations that Jean-Michel Huguenin would probably meet some twenty years later. Shot in black and white and sepia, the photographs capture the way of life, customs and traditions of the tribe, through a wide variety of scenes: men armed with spears and bows and dressed in their traditional garb, making wicker baskets, preparing food, bathing in a river, families gathered in front of their homes, and so on.
The set is enhanced by 3 postcards, each illustrated with a black and white photograph.
The collection has been carefully preserved in its two art deco albums.
