Description
[DEMONOLOGY] - WIER (Jean). Five books on the imposture and deception of devils: Enchantments and witchcraft. A rare treatise on demonology in which we find the most curious and extraordinary details. [Published in Paris by Jacques du Puy in 1569]. Size in-8 (165 x 100 mm). Full fir green chagrin, spine ribbed and threaded, decorated with gilt floral decoration and gilt framing, boards framed with a simple cold fillet, a full double gilt fillet and a gilt dotted fillet with floral corner irons, gilt fillet at the necks, guilloche headpieces, gilt roulette at the endpapers, red edges. Later binding. 7 ff.n.ch., 468 ff. 39 ff.n.ch. of tables. Upper corners slightly dulled, title page missing, last leaf of preface damaged and restored. Probably the second Paris edition by the same publisher, Jacques du Puy, who first published it in 1567, of the physician Jacques Grévin's translation of the work by his Brabant colleague Jean Wier: De Praestigiis daemonum et incantationibus ac venificiis libri V. Written and published at a time when campaigns to hunt witches and heretics were gathering pace across Europe, this work was intended to be as rational an explanation as possible for witchcraft: Wier attributed the visions of the Sabbath that the accused often ended up recognising to a disorder of the humours, and in particular of the "black bile". However, Wier does not entirely reject the action of the devil, but confines it to the actions of "infamous magicians", contrary to what the authors of the Malleus Maleficarum may have written. A few handwritten inscriptions in the margins, often cut and difficult to read. [Caillet III, 728; Pettegree (FB) 51570; STC French p. 447; not in Adams or Dorbon]. A generally well preserved and extremely fresh copy.
