Description
[MANUSCRIT - MUSIC] - JEANNIN (Jules). Chansons anciennes et nouvelles par MM. Adeline, Berthier, Blondel, Colmance, Debraux, Hachin, Jolly, J. Jeannin et Fenée, suivi des Chansons et gaudrioles de Jules Jeannin et du Cinquantenaire de la Lice chansonnière.
A calligraphic manuscript of more than 700 pages on the work of Jules Jeannin, a unique archive on the spirit of Montmartre and the goguettes of the late 19th century.
Paris, 1910.
One square in-8 volume (235 x 181 mm). Bound in green half-chagrin, gilt fillets on covers, ribbed spine decorated with a title-piece and fleurons pushed in gold and painted, gilt head. 4 ff. n. ch., XVIII-715 pages. A fine copy, well preserved binding.
Unpublished manuscript in beautiful calligraphy in black pen with titles and notes in red and blue. The work is devoted to the famous Parisian singing society La Lice Chansonnière and to preserving the work of one of its most illustrious members, the Montmartre goguettier Jules Jeannin (1824-1895). The manuscript contains more than 200 songs by Jeannin, including more than 100 songs and gaudrioles in unpublished verse.
The work also includes
A selection of nearly fifty pieces by his fellow members of the Lice Chansonnière, including Émile Debraux, Émile Cahen and Charles Colmance.
Ernest Chebroux's preface to the only published work devoted to the author (Paris, Chez Labbé, 1889).
Biographical articles, notably by Eugène Imbert and Georges Montorgueil, collected in the Nécrologie section.
The chansonnier and poet Ernest Chebroux, who became president of the society in 1900, wrote in 1889: "We must recognise in the author of so many joyful and hilarious rhymes the chansonnier who is always animated by this spirit of appropriateness, subtle, truly Parisian, full of this expressive gaiety that he knows how to communicate to all those who hear him sing his couplets with falls as comical as they are unexpected".
According to the note on the flyleaf, the work was composed by Ch. Lingray, a member of the Lice Chansonnière, who paid tribute to it to his friend Edgard Viou on 1 July 1910.
A very fine copy.
