Description
[CURIOSA]. ROPS (Félicien) & MUSSET (Alfred de). Gamiani. Or two nights of excess. Lesbos, Institution Méry - Pavillon Baudelaire, sd. [c. 1870]. In-12 (170x115mm), half water-green morocco with corners, spine with 5 nerves, gilt small-iron decorated boxes, gilt head edge, not trimmed. 2ff. - 141pp. - 1f. [17pl.] Spine and corners sunned, some foxing, marginal spotting; the justification leaf is missing. Fine edition of 150 copies on laid paper, illustrated with 8 fine etchings here in double state (in black and red), plus a third state in line for the plate on page 103. The style and quality of the drawing on the frontispiece are furiously reminiscent of Félicien Rops, although it is not signed; the Musée de Namur, however, attributes it to him... This novel in the form of a dialogue, first published in 1833, is the most widely read and reprinted licentious work of the 19th century - there have been over 40 editions. The attribution of the novel to Alfred de Musset has long been disputed, but is now beyond doubt. Provenance : - Wilfrid Chauvin (bookplate)
