Description
[MANUSCRIPT] - [MUSIC]. Collection of society tunes by the most modern authors (1776). A charming manuscript collection of salon airs in vogue at the end of the eighteenth century. Manuscript in-8 (200x160mm); full havana glazed calf, 5 ribbed mute spine, gilt scrollwork, boards framed with double gilt fillet, red edges (contemporary binding). [1f.] 129pp. [3ff.] Spellbinding, cracked spine and spine ends, small 1cm split at head of spine ends on first board, upper corners dulled. The manuscript is written in bistre ink by different hands on "Pro Patria" watermarked laid paper. It alternates between sheets of text containing lyrics and verses of songs based on popular tunes that are simply mentioned, and sheets of musical staves containing the text. Although most of the melodies and lyrics are anonymous, some are attributed to famous names such as Favart, Boufflers, Rameau, Philidor, Gretry, Monsigny, Beaumarchais, etc. The handwritten table at the end of the volume lists 50 tunes. Provenance: - Alfred Cortot (bookplate and wet stamp); considered one of the great French performers, he was mainly a pianist and conductor. A renowned teacher, he was one of the founders of the École normale de musique in Paris. During his lifetime, he built up an extensive music library, and gave his name to a Paris concert hall that is still in use today.
