Description
[MINUSCULE]. GRESSET (Louis). Ver-vert, followed by La Chartreuse, L'Abbaye and other plays. A superb copy, perfectly established in a fine binding signed Lanscelin. Paris, Édition Mignardise, 1855. In-64 (61 x 45 mm), full raspberry morocco, framed by wide gilt lace on the stamped boards with a gilt medallion in the centre adorned with a mosaic morocco fleuron, spine ribbed with compartments decorated with foliage, title and date, double fillet on the edges, inner lace, all edges gilt. Binding signed Lanscelin. 160 pages. Charming tiny book printed by Ernest Meyer with miniature characters cast by Laurent and Deberny. Printed on vellum. Composed by Jean-Baptiste Gresset in the form of four songs in decasyllables, the poem was presented in its first edition in 1734 as a "poème héroï-comique" under the title Vairvert ou les Voyages du perroquet de la Visitation de Nevers. Vert-Vert tells the humorous story of a parrot taken in by a convent in Nevers. Brought up by the Visitation nuns, Vert-Vert, a "devout parrot", actually speaks a Christian language. At the request of the congregation's nuns in Nantes, he was entrusted to a boatman on the Loire. Naturally, he learned the vocabulary of sailors and loose women on the boat. When he arrived at his destination, the parrot swore like a sailor. The nuns in Nantes were appalled and sent him back to Nevers, where they had great difficulty getting him to learn Latin again. A copy in excellent condition.
