Description
Henri DELEPOUVE (1869–1956), Rouen School, member of the Group of XXX Square Oil on canvas, signed lower right, titled on the reverse of the stretcher 66 x 81.5 cm Provenance: gifted to the C. family (Rabat, Morocco) by the artist’s daughter, Madeleine DELEPOUVE – a member of the Resistance and sister-in-law of General de Gaulle – in gratitude for their hospitality in Rabat during the Second World War. The Group of XXX was founded in 1907 on the initiative of Pierre DUMONT, who found the Salon des Artistes Rouennais too conventional. He brought together 30 artists, ‘the Club des XXX’, including the painters André DERAIN, Raoul DUFY, Robert PINCHON, Charles FRÉCHON, Robert PINCHON, Émile OTHON-FRIESZ and Henri DELEPOUVE, who together would form an avant-garde movement.
