Description
Jean PROUVÉ and Jules LELEU. Sanatorium deckchair. Created in 1936–37 for the Martel Sanatorium in Janville, this deckchair, made from bent tubing with a wavy profile, was designed by LELEU and produced in Jean PROUVÉ’s workshops. A metal mesh covers the seat, the rack-and-pinion backrest allows the angle to be adjusted, and a bar at the feet makes it easy to move the deckchair. The Martel Sanatorium in Janville had 180 rooms, and it is highly likely that the number of these deckchairs produced was around this figure. Originally lacquered (usually grey), this example was sandblasted in preparation for restoration before being stored for over twenty years, evidently in dry conditions. The wooden armrests appear to be original. A major piece of design that is just waiting to be restored to its original condition.
