The Holy Bible (Old Testament) Four hundred illustrations by James TISSOT. Paris, M. de BRUNOFF and Co., Publishers. 7 January 1904. 2 vols. of text. 2 vols. of plates (set of 4 volumes) The endpapers of the text volumes are in red moiré, framed by wide gilded morocco flaps; the endpapers of the plate volumes feature two original watercolours by James TISSOT. 4 folio volumes in full aubergine mosaic morocco, with the initials ‘A.W.’ in red. Bindings signed ‘Champs Stroobants successeur’ One of 20 copies (no. 4) on paper from the Imperial Manufactories of Japan, containing Tissot’s original watercolours (two mounted in gilt morocco frames decorated with vine tendrils and ears of corn). The first state of the heliogravure of all the inset illustrations featured lettering. The second state, with hand-applied colour highlights, of all the inset illustrations prior to the main text. The third state, with lettering, of all the inset illustrations completed in colour, all on Japanese paper. Proofs of all the text compositions, printed specially prior to the main print run on Japanese paper. A copy inscribed to Count Werlé. Expert: Sébastien HOYER
