Description
ROLEX Oyster 34 mm gold and steel, 1961 Rolex Oyster Perpetual ref. 1005, calibre 1560 ‘Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified’, 34 mm steel case, fluted gold bezel and crown, riveted gold and steel Oyster bracelet. The serial number is very difficult to read, though it appears to be 665 691 (subject to verification), which corresponds to 1961. The endlinks are engraved with ‘61’, and the bracelet is marked ‘7205’ with a folding clasp numbered 1-71 The case back clearly bears the reference 1005 and an ‘I-61’ marking, indicating production in the first quarter of 1961. The red marking beneath ‘I.61’ is most likely a watchmaker’s mark left during a previous service. This is common and has no bearing on the watch’s authenticity. The 1560 movement is genuine but is not functioning; a major service is recommended. This is an example from the early years of the 1005 (1959 ± 1988) and its consistency (case back, movement, serial number) is a real asset in terms of value. The watch as a whole displays a very pronounced patina. The gold-coloured dial, with its pyramidal baton hour markers and dauphine hands, has a beautiful patina and simply needs cleaning; the crystal is broken. The strap, although heavily patinated and significantly stretched, is a very attractive model; the pins should be checked, particularly those at the junction with the endlinks. A watch that deserves a high-quality restoration whilst preserving as many original components as possible.
